Total Knee Replacement
Total Knee Replacement (TKR) Rehabilitation
Total Knee Replacement (TKR) Rehabilitation is a vital component of recovery following knee replacement surgery. The goal is to restore joint function, enhance mobility, reduce pain, and help individuals regain their independence in daily activities. At our rehabilitation center, we offer a comprehensive, evidence-based TKR rehab program tailored to each patient’s unique needs and recovery goals.
What is TKR Rehabilitation?
TKR rehabilitation involves a combination of physical therapy, pain management, functional training, and education to ensure the best possible recovery outcomes after knee replacement surgery. The rehabilitation journey begins within 24-48 hours post-surgery and continues for several weeks to months, depending on the individual’s healing rate and functional progress.
Phases of TKR Rehab
1. Acute Phase (0–2 weeks post-surgery):
Focuses on pain control, swelling reduction, and early movement. Patients begin gentle exercises to improve circulation, prevent blood clots, and start restoring range of motion (ROM) in the knee. Weight-bearing activities with assistive devices like walkers are gradually introduced.
2. Sub-Acute Phase (2–6 weeks):
The emphasis shifts to regaining knee ROM, building muscle strength (especially quadriceps and hamstrings), and improving gait mechanics. Functional tasks such as sitting, standing, and walking without support are introduced progressively.
3. Strengthening & Mobility Phase (6–12 weeks):
Patients continue advanced strengthening exercises, balance training, and endurance workouts. The goal is to return to normal walking patterns, climb stairs comfortably, and perform daily activities without assistance.
4. Advanced Rehabilitation (3+ months):
This phase prepares individuals to return to work, sports, or recreational activities (as advised by their orthopedic surgeon). Activities may include resistance training, agility drills, and low-impact aerobic exercises.
